Where can I post signs?
Generally, you can post non-commercial signs on any property you own or control. Examples of such signs include:
- Political Signs
- School Signs (Sports Participation, Graduate Recognition, etc)
- Church Promotional Signs
- Birthday Signs
- Real Estate Signs
What about commercial signs?
With few exceptions, businesses must be located in a commercial (B-1, B-2, M-1) zoning district. Permanent commercial or advertising signs for businesses are not permitted in residential areas.
For home-based businesses with a license and permit issued by the city, small signs may be placed near the roadway.
About lighted signs...
The zoning ordinance for B-1 zones states advertising signs are permitted (in a B-1 zone):
"Advertising signs and advertising structures or lights for illuminating signs orThis means that LED signs, signs with flashing lights, etc, must be located at least 10 feet from the ground / roadway. This is to eliminate distractions to drivers.
buildings, provided that they shall not be placed within the street right-of-way, nor shall they be lighted by flashing or rotating lights unless they are permanently installed and placed at least 10 feet vertically from the ground."
Tell me more about political signs...
Signs supporting a candidate for office or a political movement or goal can be placed on property you own, control, or on property whose owner has given permission.
Temporary signs are permitted in the right-of-way and intersections of city streets, but they should not block visibility or impede traffic. Signs may be damaged by city maintenance workers or mowing.
Signs placed along State Highways may have additional restrictions or requirements. You should contact the Tennessee Department of Transportation for information about placing political signs in state rights-of-way.
Where are signs prohibited?
Generally, the City of Dyer does not permit placement of any signs on any city property, including the David Robinson Recreation Park, the Georgia McIlwain Ellis Mini-Park (downtown), the Eagle Community Center, or other parks or public spaces.
It is not unusual to see political signs placed at the entrance to parks or at the intersection of College & Main Streets (in the Georgia McIlwain Ellis Mini-Park); so long as these signs do not impede any maintenance efforts (mowing) or decrease visibility of drivers, these signs will usually be permitted to remain (there are specific regulations concerning political signs that we must follow). These signs will be removed after an election, or if they impede maintenance or visibility.
The City may place its own signs in areas otherwise prohibited.
Common sense
Any sign that impedes visibility on a roadway will be removed.
